Smog is an LED light and haze installation located in the High Line. The piece itself is made of tubular LED lights connected to an air quality sensor and a fog machine. The lights change based on the levels of air pollution and the haze is activated as visitors pass under the lights. The combination of light and haze creates a tangible real-time smog environment for the visitor to experience the feeling of the smog that otherwise goes unnoticed or ignored. The purpose of translating air pollution into light is not only to raise awareness of the quality of the air we breathe but it is also aimed to start a conversation about what New Yorkers can do about it.
