New York Aquarium
1st place NYA Project Award in 2020
Concept development · Drawings · Experience design · Graphic design · Visualization · Wayfinding + Placemaking
The proposed way-finding and place-making system for the New York Aquarium emphasize the idea of a collective effort that creates a sense of belonging and pride while connecting directly with the WCS mission. By designing an engaging entry experience to the New York Aquarium we are giving the visitor the chance to feel an important part of the greater good of the WCS.
After taking into consideration the specific goals of the project determined by the client, we conducted a thorough analysis of the site and audience that led to determining some opportunities for the new design. Among the opportunities are the use of the boardwalk to bring the attention of the passers-by, as well as the exploration of the ramp potential to create shade for long lines during the high season. During the audience study, visitors showed hesitation at the entry and struggled to find the information they needed, for that reason it was decided the need to add a second language –Spanish–, and basic information about schedule and pricing.
The WCS symbol represents the WCS mission. Signaling the overlaps of all the components that form the organization and the physical places they work. I am synthesizing the idea to conform another symbol in the shape of a “capsule” that represents all those components together. The reiteration of this new symbol alludes to the shoaling of fishes.
The materials selected for the new signage were perforated sheets of aluminum for their resistance, low cost, and recyclability, with applied powder coating that is tougher than conventional paint and also releases little to no amount of volatile organic compounds. The messaging is engraved by laser or rotary machine, and the metal underneath is polished and color filled with enamel paint.
